What is GLP-1? The hormone behind the shots
What is GLP-1? It is short for glucagon-like peptide 1, a hormone the body makes. Prescription medicines built around it include liraglutide (daily injection), semaglutide and tirzepatide (weekly injections). A supplement gummy is a different thing. If you take a GLP-1 medicine, keep taking it as prescribed.

The hormone01
What is GLP-1 in simple terms?
GLP-1 is a hormone, a chemical messenger the body makes. Its full name is glucagon-like peptide 1.
Researchers built medicines around this hormone. People often say "GLP-1" for the medicine, the hormone and the whole class. The word can mean three different things, so the table below keeps them apart.
| Term | What it is |
|---|---|
| GLP-1 hormone | A hormone made in the body |
| GLP-1 medicine | A prescription drug, such as semaglutide, approved for use (NIDDK, Weight-loss medications) |
| "GLP-1 supplement" | A marketing phrase; supplements are not reviewed by FDA before sale (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements) |
The medicines02
Which GLP-1 medicines are approved for weight loss?
Three: liraglutide, semaglutide and tirzepatide. NIDDK lists each as an injection, one daily and two weekly (NIDDK, Weight-loss medications).
Liraglutide
Sold as Saxenda. A daily injection.
Semaglutide
Sold as Wegovy. A weekly injection.
Tirzepatide
Sold as Zepbound. A weekly injection.
Names and schedules from NIDDK (NIDDK, Weight-loss medications). Other approved weight-loss drugs, such as orlistat, are pills that work in other ways.

What do GLP-1 medicines do, and who can use them?
On average, adults using weight-loss medicine plus a lifestyle program lost 3 to 12 percent more of their starting weight after 1 year than with lifestyle changes alone (NIDDK, Weight-loss medications).
Adults may qualify with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related problem. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2 should not use GLP-1 drugs. NIDDK also says medicines do not replace healthy eating and activity (NIDDK, Weight-loss medications).

FAQ05
GLP-1 basics questions
What does GLP-1 stand for?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide 1. It is a hormone the body makes. The same short name is also used for a class of prescription medicines built around it, which is why ads can blur the two. Ask a doctor what any GLP-1 product actually contains.
Are all GLP-1 weight-loss medicines injections?
The three approved GLP-1 options NIDDK lists for weight are all injections: liraglutide daily, semaglutide and tirzepatide weekly (NIDDK, Weight-loss medications). Other approved weight-loss medicines, such as orlistat, are pills, but they are not GLP-1 drugs.
Can anyone buy GLP-1 medicine without a prescription?
Not safely. FDA advises getting a prescription and using a state-licensed pharmacy, and it warns about unapproved and compounded copies (FDA, Unapproved GLP-1 drugs). Be wary of any site that sells GLP-1 products with no prescription.
