What Is a Fat Burner? A Plain Definition
What is a fat burner? It is a marketing label for supplements sold to help with weight, not a medical category. Many rely on caffeine or green tea extract. NIH says little is known about whether weight loss supplements work. Jellutide is a gummy of apple cider vinegar and BHB salts, and no trial has tested it.

Definition01
What is a fat burner?
A fat burner is a supplement that ads say will help you lose body fat. The term is marketing. It is not a medical class, and FDA does not approve these products before sale (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements).
Most fat burners come as pills, powders, drinks or gummies. They are sold as dietary supplements, which means the maker must be able to back its claims, but no one checks them in advance (FDA, Structure/Function Claims).
Ingredients02
What is in a fat burner?
Often a stimulant, a plant extract or both. Caffeine sources such as guarana and green tea extract are common.
NIH notes that green tea extract showed a small average difference in a review, and that liver damage has been linked to green tea extracts in at least 50 case reports (NIH ODS, Weight Loss). Caffeine up to 400 mg a day is considered safe for healthy adults, and combining it with other stimulants can intensify effects (NIH ODS, Weight Loss).
| Group | What sources say |
|---|---|
| Caffeine sources (guarana, green tea) | Can raise heart rate (NCCIH, Weight Control) |
| Plant extracts (forskolin, African mango) | Forskolin did not reduce weight in trials; African mango studies are small (NIH ODS, Weight Loss) |
| Vinegar or ketones (Jellutide) | Small, short studies; long-term weight effects not established (Castagna 2025, ACV meta-analysis) (Falkenhain 2022, Adv Nutr) |
Evidence03
Does a fat burner work?
Not as advertised. NCCIH says supplements marketed for rapid weight loss generally do not keep weight off long term, and some are dangerous (NCCIH, Weight Control).
NIH says lifestyle changes are the basis for long-term weight loss (NIH ODS, Weight Loss). The CDC says people who lose weight gradually, about 1 to 2 pounds a week, are more likely to keep it off (CDC, Steps for Losing Weight).
Ads often say otherwise. The FTC lists seven promises it calls always false.
FTCSeven weight-loss promises that the FTC says are always false. If an ad makes one, the ad is wrong, whatever the product.
- 01Causes weight loss of two pounds or more a week for a month or more without dieting or exercise
- 02Causes substantial weight loss no matter what or how much the consumer eats
- 03Causes permanent weight loss, even after the consumer stops using the product
- 04Blocks the absorption of fat or calories to enable consumers to lose substantial weight
- 05Safely enables consumers to lose more than three pounds per week for more than four weeks
- 06Causes substantial weight loss for all users

From the FTC Gut Check guide (FTC, Gut Check). FDA also warns that some weight-loss products sold as supplements hide prescription drugs (FDA, Hidden Ingredients) (Tucker 2018, JAMA Netw Open).

Care05
What should you check before using any fat burner?
Your medicines, your caffeine intake and the label itself. FDA advises talking to your doctor or pharmacist before using a supplement (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements).
Keep taking prescribed medicine, including any GLP-1 medicine, as directed. Read more in the guide to fat burner claims and the supplement safety guide.
FAQ06
Jellutide questions people ask
Is a fat burner the same as a diet pill?
The terms overlap. Both mean a product sold for weight. Prescription weight-loss medicines are approved drugs, while fat burners sold as supplements are not approved before sale (NIDDK, Weight-loss medications) (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements).
Are fat burners the same as thermogenics?
Thermogenic is a label word for products said to raise calorie use. For capsaicin, one example, MSKCC calls the thermogenic and appetite effects small (MSKCC About Herbs, Cayenne).
Why do some fat burners contain hidden drugs?
FDA found weight-loss products tainted with prescription drug ingredients. In one review of FDA warnings, 317 of 776 adulterated supplements were weight-loss products (Tucker 2018, JAMA Netw Open).
Who should not take a fat burner?
People on medicine, pregnant or nursing, or with heart conditions should ask a professional first. High-caffeine products can raise heart rate and cause abnormal rhythms (NCCIH, Weight Control).
