Proprietary blend: what the supplement label is allowed to hide
A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients listed under one name with a single total weight. Federal labeling rules require the ingredients in order from most to least by weight, but they do not require the amount of each one. You can sometimes estimate the parts from the rest of the panel.

The basics01
What is a proprietary blend on a supplement label?
A proprietary blend is a set of ingredients printed under one blend name, with one weight for the whole group. The weight tells you the total, not the share of each ingredient.
The rule behind it is 21 CFR 101.36. It says the blend's ingredients are listed in descending order of predominance by weight, indented under the blend name. The amount shown is the combined weight of everything in the blend (21 CFR 101.36).
So the order is a real clue, but the rule does not require the amount of each single ingredient (21 CFR 101.36).
Shown and hidden02
What can a proprietary blend hide?
It can hide how much of each ingredient you get.
That matters because research is done at set amounts. If you cannot see the amount, you cannot compare it with a study.
| Label detail | Shown? |
|---|---|
| Name of the blend | Yes |
| Total weight of the blend | Yes |
| Ingredients in order, heaviest first | Yes |
| Amount of each single ingredient | Not required |
Worked example03
How can you estimate what is inside a blend?
Use the order and the rest of the panel. The Jellutide label is a good practice case: a 525 mg blend of apple cider vinegar and BHB calcium, magnesium and sodium salts.
Vinegar is listed first, so it outweighs the salts. The panel also prints calcium 1 mg, magnesium 0.75 mg and sodium 2.5 mg. If every milligram came from the salts, they would weigh at most about 6.1 + 7.1 + 13.7 = about 27 mg.
Sodium citrate adds some sodium too, so the true figure is lower. That leaves about 498 mg or more of the 525 mg for the vinegar. These are estimates, because label values are rounded.
The label does not say whether the vinegar is liquid or powder. Tablets sold as apple cider vinegar have varied widely in acid content (Hill 2005, ACV tablets). See the apple cider vinegar page.

Are proprietary blends always a bad sign?
No. A blend is legal and common, and a short one is easier to judge than a long one. But hidden amounts make a claim harder to check, so the burden stays on the brand.

A fair test: can the label alone tell you if the amount matches the research? If not, treat any benefit claim as unproven. The FTC expects health claims to rest on rigorous human testing (FTC, Health Products Guidance).

FAQ06
Proprietary blend questions
Why do supplement companies use proprietary blends?
The rule allows it: only the blend total and the order of ingredients must be shown, not each amount (21 CFR 101.36). You cannot compare any single ingredient with a study dose.
Is the first ingredient in a blend the largest?
Yes. Blend ingredients must be listed in descending order of predominance by weight (21 CFR 101.36). The first name weighs the most and the last the least.
Does a 525 mg blend total mean 525 mg of each ingredient?
No. The amount shown is the combined weight of everything in the blend (21 CFR 101.36). In the Jellutide blend, the vinegar takes most of the 525 mg and the BHB salts a small part.
