Fake supplement reviews: seven tells to check before you trust a rating

Quick answer

Fake supplement reviews are praise or complaints written by people who never used the product, or paid for by the seller. The FTC banned them in 2024, but says they can be hard to spot. Seven tells help: bursts, one-time accounts, single sources, fake review sites, hidden incentives, polished mixes and health claims.

The rule01

What counts as a fake supplement review?

A fake review is one written by someone who does not exist, never used the product, or was paid or controlled by the seller. The FTC final rule from August 14, 2024 bans all of these, including AI-generated reviews (FTC 2024, fake reviews rule).

The rule also bans buying positive or negative reviews, undisclosed insider reviews, review suppression and fake social media indicators. It lets the FTC seek civil penalties against knowing violators (FTC 2024, fake reviews rule).

A ban does not clean up every page, though. The FTC says fake reviews can be hard to spot (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews).

Seven tells02

How can you spot fake supplement reviews?

Look for patterns, not single reviews. One odd review means little. A pattern of the signs below means more.

Seven tells and where they come from.

1. A burstMany reviews posted over a short periodFTC advice (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews)
2. One-review accountsA reviewer who exists only to post one reviewFTC advice (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews)
3. One sourcePraise on one site and nowhere elseFTC advice (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews)
4. A fake refereeA "review site" run by the sellerFTC rule (FTC 2024, fake reviews rule)
5. Hidden perksIncentivized reviews with no labelFTC advice (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews)
6. Polished mixA few 3-star reviews added to look realFTC advice (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews)
7. Body claimsStories used as proof of a health effectFTC guidance (FTC, Health Products Guidance)

Fakes can also be negative reviews aimed at competitors (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews).

Why it matters03

Why are reviews weak proof for a supplement?

Because a review is a story, and stories cannot show cause. The FTC says anecdotal evidence, including testimonials and consumer surveys, is never enough to back a claim about a health product's effects (FTC, Health Products Guidance).

Real people also differ. Someone who changed their meals and started walking may credit a gummy. A star rating cannot separate those things.

FDA lists many rave reviews among its warning signs for hidden ingredients in weight-loss products (FDA, Hidden Ingredients). Good reviews are not a safety test.

Your steps04

What should you do before trusting a review?

Check more than one source, read who wrote each review, and trust a published trial over any star rating. Then ask a pharmacist about the product itself.

  • Compare at least two independent sources, as the FTC suggests (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews)
  • Look at the reviewer's history, not just the text
  • Ask whether the review mentions a perk or a free bottle
  • Look for a human trial of the product, not just its ingredients

What about Jellutide reviews?

This site publishes no Jellutide star rating, review count or customer quote, because none has been verified. The review cards on our reviews page are empty on purpose.

The only photos in those slots come from the vendor and are labelled that way. We would rather show a blank than a made-up score. Our is Jellutide legit page weighs the sales claims against the evidence instead.

If you buy, keep your own notes, and keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

FAQ06

Review questions

Is it illegal to write fake reviews for supplements?

Under the FTC rule announced August 14, 2024, selling or buying fake reviews, and writing reviews as someone who never used the product, is banned. The FTC can seek civil penalties against knowing violators (FTC 2024, fake reviews rule).

Are five-star-only review pages a red flag?

They can be one sign among several. The FTC notes that some fakes give less than top ratings to seem believable, so a mix proves nothing either (FTC, Evaluate Online Reviews). Look at timing, reviewer history and whether other sites agree before you decide.

Can a seller run its own review site?

Not while posing as independent. The FTC rule bans company-controlled sites that pose as independent review sites (FTC 2024, fake reviews rule). If a site that rates products is owned by a seller or earns money from order links, check whether it says so plainly.

Do reviews prove a supplement works?

No. The FTC says testimonials and surveys are never enough to prove a health product's effects. Human clinical testing is the standard (FTC, Health Products Guidance).
