What are exogenous ketones?
Exogenous ketones are ketones taken from outside the body, as a drink or supplement. BHB salts are one type. Ketone esters are another.
The body makes its own ketones when carbohydrate is low. A supplement raises blood ketones without that change in eating, but only for a short time. In a small study, a salt drink peaked near 1.0 mM, and an ester drink near 2.8 mM (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol).

Do exogenous ketones help with weight loss?
No study shows that. Blood glucose after one dose is a different question from body weight over months. The review measured the first and found little evidence on the second (Falkenhain 2022, Adv Nutr).
Nothing in the review says a ketone dose changes body weight. NIH says lifestyle changes are the basis of long-term weight loss, and that little is known about whether weight loss supplements work (NIH ODS, Weight Loss).
