BHB Salts vs Ketone Esters: Dose and Blood Ketones
BHB salts vs ketone esters comes down to form and strength. Salts bind the ketone to a mineral; esters do not. In one study, an ester drink raised blood D-BHB to 2.8 mM and a salt drink to 1.0 mM. The Jellutide label lists salts, not esters, and only milligrams of them.

The forms01
What is the difference between BHB salts and ketone esters?
BHB salts bind the ketone to a mineral such as calcium, magnesium or sodium. A ketone ester is a different, non-salt form of the ketone, with no mineral attached.
Both are sold as exogenous ketones, meaning ketones taken from outside the body.
The ketone itself also comes in two mirror-image shapes. The body prefers one, called D-BHB. In one study the salts were about half L-BHB, while the ester was over 99 percent D-BHB (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol).
Blood ketones02
Which form raises blood ketones more?
The ester did, in the one study that compared them side by side. Fifteen volunteers drank ester or salt drinks giving about 12 or 24 g of BHB (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol).
Blood D-BHB peaked at 2.8 mM after the ester and only 1.0 mM after the salt. The salt took about twice as long to peak (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol). A review of 43 trials found the same pattern for blood glucose: monoesters had significantly larger effects than salts (Falkenhain 2022, Adv Nutr).
| Measure | Ketone ester | BHB salt |
|---|---|---|
| Peak blood D-BHB | 2.8 mM | 1.0 mM |
| Time to peak | Shorter | About 2-fold longer |
| Share of D-BHB form | Over 99 percent | About half |
| Minerals delivered | None from the compound | 1.6 to 3.2 g of each mineral |
The mineral load03
Why do BHB salts bring minerals with them?
Because the mineral is half of the salt. At study doses, that meant 1.6 to 3.2 g of each cation per drink (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol).
Blood sodium rose and blood potassium fell by 0.7 mM in that study (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol). In another, a large dose of a sodium and calcium BHB salt upset the stomach in some adults (Fischer 2018, BHB salt study).
A Jellutide gummy is far from those doses. Its panel lists 1 mg of calcium, 0.75 mg of magnesium and 2.5 mg of sodium, and those lines cap the salts at about 27 mg.

Is Jellutide made with salts or esters?
Salts. The label reads "BHB Calcium/Magnesium/Sodium (B-hydroxybutyrate salts)", second in a 525 mg blend after apple cider vinegar.
No ester is listed. The label gives no single amounts, which the rule allows (21 CFR 101.36), so we worked out the ceiling from the minerals. The salts hold about 23 mg of BHB at most. Study drinks gave about 12 to 24 g.
The sales page promises "24/7 automatic fat-burning" (Jellutide sales page). Neither form has shown that.

Care05
Who should ask a professional before taking ketone products?
Anyone on medicine, pregnant or nursing, or living with a medical condition should ask first, as the Jellutide label says.
Keep taking prescribed medicine, including any GLP-1 medicine, as directed. Read the label for sodium and sugar too: each gummy has 2 g of sugars. The BHB salts page covers the amounts in full.
FAQ06
Jellutide questions people ask
Are ketone esters sold in gummies?
We found no ketone ester listed on the Jellutide label, and we cannot speak for other products. The Jellutide bottle lists BHB salts only. The esters in the study above were drinks, not gummies.
What does D-BHB versus L-BHB mean?
They are mirror-image forms of the same molecule. The body uses D-BHB most directly. In one study, the ester was over 99 percent D-BHB, while the salts were about 50 percent L-BHB (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol).
Can a gummy match a ketone drink?
Not at the amounts we can work out. A study drink gave about 12 or 24 g of BHB (Stubbs 2017, Front Physiol), while one Jellutide gummy holds at most about 23 mg, from the label's mineral lines. No study has tested the gummy.
Which form is easier on the stomach?
We found no head-to-head stomach data. For salts, a large dose upset some adults in a small study (Fischer 2018, BHB salt study). One gummy lists only milligram amounts of salts, so large-dose effects are not the issue there.
