How much added sugar per day? What the new guidelines say

Quick answer

How much added sugar per day? The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines, released in January 2026, say no amount of added sugars is recommended as part of a healthy diet, and advise no more than 10 grams in one meal. The FDA label still uses a 50 gram Daily Value as a reference. Less is better.

The new guidance01

How much added sugar a day do the new guidelines allow?

They name no daily amount. The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines, released in January 2026, state that no amount of added sugars or non-nutritive sweeteners is recommended as part of a healthy diet (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030).

They do give a meal-level limit: one meal should contain no more than 10 grams of added sugars. Added sugars should be avoided in infancy and early childhood, and no amount is recommended for children 5 to 10 (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030).

The older cap of under 10 percent of daily calories from added sugars does not appear in this edition (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030).

The label number02

What is the 50 gram added sugar number on labels?

It is the Daily Value. FDA sets the Daily Value for added sugars at 50 grams a day, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. That equals 200 calories, or 10 percent of calories (FDA, Added Sugars label).

The Dietary Guidelines say the 10 percent figure no longer appears in their text, though it still underlies the FDA 50 g Daily Value (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030). So the two numbers have different jobs. One is advice, the other is a label yardstick.

Two sources, two jobs.

What counts03

What counts as added sugar?

Sugars added during processing, table sugar, syrups, honey and concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. Sugars naturally in milk, fruit or vegetables do not count (FDA, Added Sugars label).

That is why a label has two lines. Total sugars include the natural kind, and "Includes ... Added Sugars" shows only what was put in.

  • Read the added sugars line first, not just total sugars
  • Use the % DV column: 5% or less is low, 20% or more is high (FDA, Added Sugars label)
  • Look at drinks and sauces, where added sugar hides

How much added sugar is in a Jellutide gummy?

One gram. Each 2.5 g gummy lists 2 g of total sugars, including 1 g of added sugars, which the label rates at 2% DV.

The math checks out: 1 g is 2 percent of 50 g. By the FDA scale that is a low source (FDA, Added Sugars label). It is also well under the 10 g a meal that the new guidelines mention (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030).

The gummy base lists corn syrup and pure cane sugar. Because the guidelines recommend no amount, count that gram if you track sugar or carbs. See our sugar and gummy base page for the full list.

Your habit05

How can you cut back on added sugar?

Start with the biggest sources and read labels. Small swaps in drinks and sauces usually matter more than one gummy.

If you have diabetes or track carbs, talk to your doctor before adding any gummy. The Jellutide side effects page covers other cautions. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

FAQ06

Added sugar questions

Is 1 gram of added sugar a lot?

Not by the FDA scale. One gram is 2 percent of the 50 g Daily Value, and 5 percent or less counts as a low source (FDA, Added Sugars label). The new guidelines still recommend no amount, so it is worth counting if you track sugar.

Did the 2025-2030 guidelines drop the 10 percent of calories rule?

Yes, it does not appear in this edition. The guidelines state that no amount of added sugars is recommended, though the 10 percent figure still underlies the FDA 50 g Daily Value (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030).

How much added sugar is OK for kids?

The 2025-2030 guidelines say added sugars should be avoided in infancy and early childhood, and that no amount is recommended for children 5 to 10 (Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030). Ask your child's doctor about specifics.

Are the sugars in fruit counted as added sugar?

No. Added sugars are those put in during processing, such as table sugar, syrups, honey and concentrated juices. Sugars naturally in milk, fruit or vegetables are not counted (FDA, Added Sugars label).
